Help with Math?

Can anyone give me some hints on helping my child with math?
I have tried flash cards , books ,he has a leapster learning game, I've tried showing him and working with him one on one , I give him rewards when he gets his work right ....
but he is still mixing up adding and subtraction he does them backwards..
he add when he should subtract or subtracts when he should add..
any hints ? he's 6 he will be 7 in april he's in the 1st grade

Thank you who have left hints for me I have tried money, fingers, working on adding for a month then sub.. I keep saying adding is more put more you get more and sub.. is you lose some it's gone take it away he is still getting it backwards He can do it you just have to make him sit there longer... you have to do one on one with him .......

Using flashcards, but instead of displaying the card and then having him tell you the answer, have him repeat what the card says.

2 + 4 =

"Two plus four equals"

"The plus sign means I put them together"

"Put 2 fingers with 4 fingers and I count"

"6 fingers"

At this age the concept is more important then the answer. If your son gets to the point where he sees the + sign and know he needs to add but gives you the wrong answer don't freak. After the concept is down it becomes memorization (none of us when presented with the problem 599 +1 goes through and actually add it up)
