Is it okay if I write a story set in America and the characters are Americans? (details below)?

I've read that some folks are tired of reading about stories set in America or that the characters are Americans even going as far as to say that books about Americans or set in America has become a cliche.

Is it all right if I do it anyway? I won't do it if its a problem.

I think you need to look at that Information more closely. 'Some' folks are tired of reading about cliched stories set in America - but they are also tired of reading about cliched stories set elsewhere in the world. Mostly, they are looking for a good read and it doesn't matter where it is set. If they are looking for exotic locales, they can always look at travel books.
If you are American, and have not lived or at the very least visited places outside of the USA, then I would strongly urge you to set your plots in the USA because writing about a place you have never been raises terrible problems. I've read many books where writers have done just that - and have had landmarks in the wrong place, streets running in the wrong direction, the whole ambiance of the place was just wrong, wrong, wrong and no matter how interesting the plot, for me, that ruined the story. So stick with a setting you know and concentrate on the writing, on the character development, and on moving the action forward.
