Boarding Private Schools

Schools, where pupils board, is a British idea and they are still most popular in the UK. Boarding private schools operate in the United States too and in old outposts of the British Empire, such as India. They started as charity schools in the 12th century and then became fee paying. Teachers were normally clergymen until the 19th century and they were a favorite option for British parents who were posted overseas. The schools offered the opportunity for their children to receive an education and way of life from the mother country.

There are schools that accept children from a very young age but most pupils attend between the ages of 13 - 18. Younger children, aged 9 -12 years old sometimes enroll at preparatory boarding private schools but this is not as fashionable as it once was. Many countries use the British schools as a template for how they should be run. Parents send their children to these schools for many reasons. If they have a job in which they move around a lot, it gives a permanent base for the child, rather than repeatedly changing schools. Generations of families often go to the same school, carrying on family tradition.

This type of education has been controversial amongst people who oppose it. Many pupils speak of being unhappy and homesick. Others take to the life with enthusiasm. Certainly, the facilities are excellent, with more expensive boarding private schools having first class sporting opportunities and the best technology. Some even have their own squash courts and cinemas.

Pastoral care should be as important as academic standards and sporting achievement. For many children, breaking away from a family home life can be very difficult. The schools are divided into Houses, with each one having a housemaster or housemistress to look after the pupils. The Matron performs housekeeping duties and the House Tutors are there to assist pupils with their studies. Prefects within the student body are instructed to maintain discipline.

A typical school house will contain dormitories for sleeping in, a library and school chapel. There will also be a common room, in which pupils can relax in their free time. There are plenty out of school hours activities, such as amateur dramatic groups, chess clubs, debating societies or fencing clubs. Boarding private schools have often featured in novels and films. Much of the story in the Harry Potter books and movies takes place at a boarding school. This has had an unexpected consequence, as the numbers of enrollments for these schools in the UK has greatly increased!

Business School

Have you ever stopped to think about the twists and turns your life makes? I have been reflecting more on this lately, I think it is because I am getting close to a milestone birthday and my youngest is going to college. When I was in college I had such grand plans to make huge differences in our social service system in my career as a social worker. After twenty five years I fear I have become part of the system and now I am counting the years and months to retirement.

My oldest son is following in his father?s footsteps and has joined the military. My youngest son wants to get a degree in business. Most of the past year he has been preparing for business school admission. Neither my husband nor I have any background in business so we have not been able to help him. My brother-in-law has been very successful in the insurance business and so he has offered to help our son with the business school admission. This is quite a competitive area and we are finding that it is one of those cases that who you know can have a great impact on getting in.

There are several colleges and universities that are within one hundred miles from our home. Two of them are well known for their school of business. Our son feels it is very important in such a competitive field to have his degree from one of the top ranked schools. He was given this information from his guidance counselor and my brother-in-law agrees. The business school admission is a complicated process that I do not completely understand. My son will not be in the business school until he completes his general education classes. The grades he gets in his general education classes along with recommendations from professors will help him get into the business school. A priority is given to those students that receive their general education at the same university. So even though the cost of tuition for the general education classes is greater at this school than the university closest to us, he has decided that he needs to go there. I have heard many stories about credits not transferring from one university to another, so I am in agreement that he should obtain his entire education from one school. My husband and I are just going to have to put off our retirement for a couple more years to help him pay for the cost of his education. Maybe if he is successful enough he will support us in our retirement.

California High Schools

California high schools range, like most across the nation, from those high in standards to those severely lacking?in quality, in tools and materials, and in morale.

But as a community college instructor who taught at-risk students from the ?feeder? California high schools in the summer, I would like to focus on the quality institutions?using the same information you can find on a number of websites.

HIGHEST RANKED CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOLS

The ?no child left behind? policy/program came along long after most of these schools were already reaching high. Such schools are ranked by the California Department of Education, given how they sit on the scale: the 1-10 indicating whether the school is in the top one percent through the top ten percent?of all schools in the state. (Such demographics as follows are included in the ranking process: grade level, level of parents? education, and number of students getting free or reduced-price lunch [according to greatschools.net].)

Here are some of the highest ranking schools, for example, in the San Mateo and San Francisco County districts:

At 9 are Aragon High School, Burlingame High School, and Carlmont High School.

At 8 is Hillsdale High School, which is in a more upscale neighborhood, by the way.

At 7, in primarily working-class surroundings, are El Camino High School, Capuchino High School, and Half Moon Bay High School.

And at 2, in the heart of San Francisco on Mission Street, is Jefferson High School.

MOST MANAGABLE CLASSROOM SIZED CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOLS

Another important criterion in the evaluation of high schools is how small the classrooms remain?the teachers clearly able to provide more quality instruction to the more controlled sizes.

Keep in mind that while average size protocol hasn?t changed all that much in many years, population changes have impacted the attempts to keep the average number of students per classroom down to between 20-30.

The following averages, then, according to the standards set by and the reports made by the Dept of Education and others, do not account for classes with more than 50 students (lecture classes, for example), classes taught by department chairs, or special education classes (according to CADOE, 2005-06):

With an average of 25 students per classroom, Jefferson might use this stat to account for its high success/ranking. Close behind 27 students per class on average is Hillsdale. Capuchino and El Camino follow with an average of 28 students per classroom. And with 30 per class on average are Carlmont, Half Moon Bay, and Burlingame. Aragon has 31.

CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOLS WITH SPECIAL SUPPORTIVE PROGRAMS

Might affordable nourishment also account for highly ranking success?
At Burlingame and Aragon high schools, 2 and 5 percent of the students reportedly participate in the federal free and reduced-price lunch program(s). 8 percent do so at Hillsdale High. Respectively, 13, 14, and 17 percent participate in the program(s) at El Camino, Carlmont, and Capuchino. And 24, 25, and 26 percent receive free or reduced cost lunches at High Tech High, Half Moon Bay, and Baden. And again, Jefferson High sees 44% of the students taking the free or reduced-price lunches.

Other factors are important in the assessing of California high schools, but classroom size reduction, the institution of affordable lunches programs, and the relentless devotion on behalf of parents, teachers, and high school administrators clearly contribute to the student?s successful futures.

California Traffic Schools

California traffic schools, like all state traffic schools, offer legitimate and helpful materials for you to refresh, pay a reduced fine, and keep points off your driving record. Recently, I have been fortunate?ahem?to take advantage of one of the many fine California traffic schools online, one which is just as thorough but easier and faster to complete.

You can go to a designated venue and sign up for and complete the prescribed work to fix a ticket, pay a lesser fine (mine was almost 800 dollars without traffic school certification!), or if you are a true masochist who wants to re-learn traffic and driving laws, rules, and regulations.

You can go to a themed school, too. You can indulge in the ice cream social traffic school, the comedy traffic school, or even the all-you-can-eat pizza school. Whichever you choose, or whichever works for you, all of the traffic schools require a minimum of hours of attendance (typically between six and eight) and a passing score on the final exam. (There are review quizzes as you go.)

CALIFORNIA TRAFFIC SCHOOLS ONLINE

California traffic schools online provide the same requisite materials and testing, and are just as good for you to use against the cost of the ticket, against points on your record, and against increased insurance rates (which without traffic school will be impacted by the ticket you get, if it is a moving violation ticket).

Online, however, you obviously don?t have to go anywhere; you can read/study and test at your own pace; and you can have the certificate of completion mailed to you?or even express-mailed!

I got a speeding ticket in the new town I had moved to a few weeks earlier. I hadn?t had a speeding ticket since I was a new driver, almost 30 years ago. But this town is tendentious with the signs, rules, etc., so I was ?caught?. I used one of the online California traffic schools that is awesome. Most all of the text/materials is/are clear, and with a pretest after every chapter, I couldn?t help but pass the final test.

The school online is at idrivesafely.com, and, as it promises, not only offers the self-paced course for a cheap fee (15.00) but has no hidden fees (which you should watch out for in many online courses!)?AND gives every 100th customer a free run.

I researched a bit to find the best, quickest, and most affordable deal, and evidently I got lucky. For as the promoters of one list of California traffic schools claims, ?We recommend I Drive Safely as your best choice for California traffic school online. Not only can I Drive Safely's course dismiss a traffic ticket, attending a traffic school can enhance your driving knowledge & skill and increases your awareness and the safety of you, your family and other drivers.?

Chinese Medicine Schhols

I've been interested in alternative health care and treatment methods for a very long time now. My interest in herbal remedies, acupuncture, and other natural therapies stems partly from my body's inability to respond to the usual drugs that pharmaceutical companies put on the market and partly from a genuine desire for knowledge of both ancient and modern healing techniques. I became so interested in these subjects, in fact, that I decided to study them formally. I therefore set about to find a Chinese medicine school that offered courses in these fields as well as certificates or perhaps even a degree.

Unfortunately, I didn't realize just how difficult it would be to find a Chinese medicine school near me. Although I live in a major city that is known for its cultural diversity and educational opportunities, I had no luck finding anything that even resembled a Chinese medicine school. A couple of community colleges in the area offered weekend workshops in massage therapy, but that's about as close as I got to alternative health care education. While that was a good start, a workshop was simply no substitute for an all-out Chinese medicine school.

I wasn't about to give up, though. I was pretty sure I'd be able to find a Chinese medicine school that offered online instruction in a wide range of subjects. The only thing I was worried about was being able to confirm the school's accreditation or reputation within the academic community. After all, I planned on using the knowledge that I gained from this Chinese medicine school in a legitimate career. Therefore, I needed to go to an approved Chinese medicine school that would provide in-depth instruction in all the traditional medicines and healing techniques associated with that rich culture.

As I expected, my Internet search yielded more results than I knew what to do with. There were a couple of nationally recognized academic institutions that boasted a Chinese medicine school as part of their standard curriculum. These universities offered several different degrees and certificates in natural healing, and sounded pretty good. But these Chinese medicine schools were too far away and didn't have many online classes. Then there were several Internet-only Chinese medicine schools that specialized in providing students with a comprehensive education in alternative health care via distance learning. I was definitely more interested in these latter institutions, so I kept searching until I found a Chinese medicine school that had just the right combination of quality instructors, useful classes, and affordable prices.

I've been taking courses at a Chinese medicine school for more than a month now, and I have to say that I'm thrilled with my choice. I am learning so much about the subject and I just know I'll be able to use my new knowledge and skills in a great career someday. Enrolling at an online Chinese medicine school was one of the best decisions I've ever made!
